On May 12, 2008, a devastating earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale hit Wenchuan County in Sichuan Province. It was the most powerful earthquake to hit China since the Great Earthquake of Tangshan in 1976.

Immediately after the earthquake, Hu Jintao, Secretary-General of the Chinese Communist Party, instructed officials to assist injured people as quickly as possible and do that was possible to ensure the safety of people in quake zone. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also flew to the quake zone immediately to direct relief operations. At that time, residents in the quack zone were facing the grim reality of having no homes to return to, and their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and transportation became the concern of the entire nation.
